February 22 was Digital Learning Day!
In honor of Digital Learning Day, MacDonald library invited teachers to join them on a virtual tour in the library. Using the iPads, they provided a lesson for students on Harriet Tubman, that gave Aram Kabodian a chance to explore two new software apps that can enhance teaching.
Nearpod is a smart new app that can deliver lesson content in a more interactive way than PowerPoint, Presi, or SMART presentation. Teachers use it to deliver the presentation live to a student's own device (iPad or laptop), while still controlling the slides that the class sees. Nearpod has features that allow interactive slides that solicit instant feedback from students, that can be used to engage students, allow for a quick informal assessment and more. Slide options also include quizzes and VR-based virtual field trips. Perhaps most exciting, the device allows teachers to cut the tether that ties them to the teacher station, as teachers can walk around the classroom on their own device while delivering content!
Sway is a Microsoft Office digital storytelling app used for creating interactive reports, presentations and more. This platform allows more seamless integration of images, texts, videos and more.
As teachers, we are always looking to improve the way we use our devices and perhaps how we can use the SAMR model to redefine technology in our lessons. It’s a constant learning curve and new apps are constantly being thrown our way. Many of you have used PowerPoint, Presi or SMART presentation to deliver content to your students. Nearpod is a similar tool that can completely redefine the way we deliver this content.
Using Nearpod would be a method of keeping your students focused and involved in the presentation. Nearpod enables teachers to deliver a lesson live to students by allowing them to access the content of the presentation on their own device (using the iPad or laptop carts) via a student code. The teacher controls what slide displays on the student screens but the students can also answer questions, take quizzes, and participate in virtual field trips. Polls can be used in the live teaching mode to engage students and quickly access whether a concept has been understood.
In honor of Digital Learning Day, Technology & Media Services invites you to join in on this virtual tour. Using the iPads, we will provide a lesson for your students on Harriet Tubman, that will also give teachers a chance to explore two new software apps that can enhance your teaching. Please reserve a spot for your class to visit or for you to participate individually during your planning hour by emailing [email protected].

On February 22, tens of thousands of educators and students across the country demonstrated how technology can improve student learning as part of the sixth annual national Digital Learning Day.
What do we mean by digital learning?
Digital learning is any instructional practice that effectively uses technology to strengthen a student’s learning experience. It emphasizes high-quality instruction and provides access to challenging content, feedback through formative assessment, opportunities for learning anytime and anywhere, and individualized instruction to ensure all students reach their full potential to succeed in college and a career.
Digital learning encompasses many different facets, tools, and applications to support and empower teachers and students, including online courses, blended or hybrid learning, or digital content and resources. Additionally, digital learning can be used for professional learning opportunities for teachers and to provide personalized learning experiences for students.

A message from #517EdTech:
REMC (the statewide organization that makes #517EdTech possible) has opened up its Call for Presenters for it’s first-ever Maker Summit. The Summit is on June 20th in Battle Creek, MI.
I know that there’s a lot of great maker/STEM/STEAM going on in #517EdTech classrooms all over the capital area. Presenting at statewide events is a great opportunity to tell your story and network with others who can help strengthen your classroom as well.
