Each month, Technology & Media Services recognizes an East Lansing Public Schools teacher who utilizes technology in their classroom in thoughtful ways that enhance instruction.

Click here to nominate a teacher.

If you or a teacher in your building stands out to you in this area, please feel free to pass their name along with a brief explanation of what it is that makes their instruction so special. We would love to share it district wide.

With the new gradebook we lost the email function and many of you have worked with us to build Outlook groups to allow for emailing parents en masse. We're working on an alternate workaround until PowerSchool builds the function back into their gradebook. See if you like this:

OPTION 1:  When you first log into PowerTeacher, click on the backpack icon (over to the right) and click on Email Addresses at the very top of the left side menu.

If you are emailing the entire class, you can check the box at the very top of the Parent/Guardian Email column, scroll down to the bottom, select Delimited type: Semicolon, and click on Build List. This dumps all of the email addresses into the text box at the bottom of the screen and highlights them so can click CTRL+C on your keyboard, open a new email, and paste (CTRL+V) the addresses in the BC field. You can put your own email address in the To field so the email goes out to you and blind copies all of your parents for the class.

OPTION 2:  In your gradebook, click the Class icon that is now at the top of the menu bar and click on Email Class.  Then it’s the same steps as above. Check the appropriate box(es), click Build List, then copy and paste the addresses into an email.

You’re not able to email from within your gradebook, you’re still using Outlook, but this prevents you from having to build and update groups as your roster changes.

Let us know what you think. Thanks!

A few important notes about the classroom iPads that we will distribute for the 2017-18 school year:

They do not leave the building for any reason in order to comply with federal Internet content filtering laws.

They will be checked out of and back into the building librarians at the beginning and end of every school year.

Work requests still go through the work order database.

Apps are requested through the iPad App Request link on the district webpage (www.elps.us > STAFF > iPad App Request).

Damages and loss will be covered through your respective building budget. Sorry, principals.

Chargers will be passed out with the iPads and the storing and charging will be expected of each classroom teacher.

If you do not need or want your iPads, do not check them out from the building librarian. They are not to be ‘long term loaned’ to one another due to their inventorying and management.

Smart Notebook was updated this summer and the new version does NOT support Flash. If you weren’t aware, Flash is going away and Smart stopped supporting it with the new version and that will impact any interactive Notebook files you may have created or used that incorporated Flash content. Apparently, the math curriculum Notebook files have Flash content in many of them and that content will no longer display with our version of Notebook.

http://knowledgebase.force.com/articles/TROUBLESHOOTING/Adobe-Flash-objects-not-supported-in-SMART-Notebook-16-2-or-later

Per our Smart rep:

As far as Flash goes, there are several options that will essentially do the same thing as many of those Flash objects. For example, if a teacher wants to do a learning activity that was previously made in a Flash game found in the Lesson Activity Toolkit (in the Gallery Tab in Notebook) then I would direct them to create one of the LAB activities such as “fill in the blanks” or “Flip Out” or “Super Sort”…. here are a few resources on that:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xY02GkdjAwOr_vpJmVoDpGZ1VL9uleIAm6_rY6k0d0Y/edit

https://education.smarttech.com/products/smart-learning-suite/smart-lab

If a teacher is looking for objects like timers or random object selectors or interactive periodic tables, then I would direct them to the “widgets” that can be downloaded from the SMART Exchange:

http://exchange.smarttech.com/search.html?q=#type=Widgets

Once downloaded they can add the object to their Gallery so it will always live there every time they open up Notebook.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may create and if there is enough interest we can organize a Smart training session to help those not as familiar with the software or those that may need a refresher. Thanks.

We’ve been generous for the first few days in permitting emails and phone calls regarding technical issues but we will start directing folks to submit tickets for issues. We want to help you resolve any technical issue as quickly as possible but we’re spending too much time managing our email, voicemail, and the ticket system. So please, help us help you and submit tickets from the link on the district website. Use your network log in and password to log in. Tickets trump emails and phone calls should only be for emergencies.

21 THINGS MODULES ARE A HIT!
Explore and learn new technology skills

The 21Things4Teachers modules were a big hit this summer with teachers completing thirty-four modules.  Each self-contained module covers current educational topics such as media literacy, the maker movement and assessment. It takes about ten hours to complete a module. Detailed information about the nine modules can be found here on the 21Things4Teachers site. Educators can earn 10 SCECHs for each completed module and up to 90 SCECHs if all nine are completed.

Nancy Blount from Shelby Public Schools used her new skills to create a video introducing her Maker project. The video shows how to use Makey Makey and the importance of creativity in the classroom.

The self-paced module course is being offered again this fall starting October 1 through December 22. An instructor facilitates each course. More information and registration can be found here.

As always...

Technology & Media Services offers one-on-one and group support for teachers all throughout the school year as well as in the summer. Instructional technology activities qualify as professional development under section 1526 and section 1527 if the activity leads to new knowledge about using technology-enhanced methods and strategies to enhance student learning. This means you can schedule technology professional development before school, after school and on your prep and have it count toward your voluntary district provided PD hours (professional development that is being counted as instructional time as allowed by Michigan Compiled Law (MCL) Section 388.1701 Section 101(10), may only occur when students are not already receiving instruction). You may use the attached list of technology related activities as you assess your technology needs. This list is meant to act as a guide, not a requirement.

Request PD by going to www.elps.us > STAFF > Technology Work Request.
